Nature
Discover the rich natural heritage of Western Mani – from endemic plants to diverse wildlife.

Golden Eagle
Aquila chrysaetos
The golden eagle soars over the peaks and gorges of Taygetos, hunting hares, partridges, and other prey. These magnificent raptors nest on cliff ledges and in tall trees, returning to the same sites year after year.

Hermann's Tortoise
Testudo hermanni
Hermann's tortoise is found throughout the lower elevations of the Mani, from coastal areas to the lower mountain slopes. These gentle reptiles are often encountered in olive groves and scrubland, where they feed on vegetation and fallen fruit.

Wild Boar
Sus scrofa
The wild boar is common throughout the forests of Taygetos. These intelligent and adaptable animals were an important source of meat for the mountain communities, including the barrel makers who hunted them to supplement their diet during the long months in the forest workshops.
Natural Heritage of Mani
The Mani Peninsula is home to a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life. The rugged terrain of Mount Taygetos, combined with the Mediterranean climate and relative isolation, has created unique habitats that support many endemic species found nowhere else in the world.
From the ancient olive groves and aromatic herbs of the lowlands to the alpine meadows and forests of Taygetos, the region offers a living laboratory for understanding Mediterranean ecology and the relationship between humans and nature over millennia.
