Kitriniari Tower

The Kitriniari Tower stands as a sentinel of Mani's pre-revolutionary past, perched at 700 meters on the western slopes of Mount Taygetos. This 18th-century fortified residence exemplifies the defensive architecture that defined life in the Mani Peninsula during Ottoman times.

Location & Strategic Significance

The tower is located on a characteristic elevation - on the bare rock of the "koudouna" - at an altitude of 700 meters on the borders of the Municipal District of Exochori in Messenian Mani, on the western slopes of Mount Taygetos, very close to the Samuel Monastery.

This tower, along with the monasteries of Samuel and Vaidenitsa a little higher up, formed the fortified triangle of Saidona for the defense and protection of the villages of Kardamyli and Androuvista from possible Turkish raids from the direction of Vasiliki.

It represents a typical example of a fortified residence (tower house) from the 18th century. When the area was bustling with life and people traveled on foot and with animals, the tower, due to its strategic position, controlled the passages and dominated the ravine.
